jeff key

Growing up gay in the South in the 70’s, with a strong Christian family who prayed you’d become a preacher doesn’t sound like the ideal start for an ex-Marine turned playwright. But that’s exactly the upbring Jeff Key had, and he wouldn’t trade it for the world. In Showtime’s original movie/documentary about the man, his autobiographical play, and his experiences in the Iraq War, you meet Key (as his Marine buddies call him), take a journey with him as he describes his early life, his coming out and his move to LA after college, and then follow his words and pictures as he joins the marines and less than two years later is sent to Iraq.

Jeff Key most definitely has a poet’s soul, as the words to describe a country torn apart by war flow out of him effortlessly. His descriptions of the children, the beautiful and radiant children, moved me to tears. “Mister Mister!” is a cry I’ve heard in other countries as children starving for nourishment of both the body and the spirit crowd around. For this Marine, it was an experience that altered him to the core. From his first footprints on sandy soil to his airlift out in a medical chopper, Jeff’s story rings of a heartbreak I cannot imagine.

That’s what it was for him, too. Heartbreak. The friends interviewed for the show all saw it, his family saw it, and it radiates in his eyes through the screen. The Iraqi people broke Jeff Keys’ heart. Which is why, upon returning home to discover he and his team had been looking for weapons that did not exist, had been surrounded by people who increasingly wanted them out of their country, Jeff Keys wrote the hardest letter he’d ever written. He came out of the closet, claiming “Don’t ask, don’t tell simply doesn’t work for me anymore.”

Keys went into the Marines knowing he was gay. Most of the men he served with knew he was gay. Jeff chose to closet himself to fight for a country he believed in, but his reasons for fighting and serving as a Marine became his reasons for leaving. And so he came out, and is asking and telling all over the place.

An amazing movie, a must-see. It’s showing several more times, so be sure to catch it next time around. And to Jeff Keys, I say Semper Fi, brother. Semper Fi.

Meadowlands recap - episode 2

meadowlands 2

When we last left the Brogan family, they were just beginning to think the life of a witness protected family could end up working out for them. Mark had begun to talk again after four months, Zoe was making friends with the handyman, Danny was working on the bar and bonding over midnight soccer, and Evelyn was already warding off advances made by the town doctor!

This week’s episode brought much drama and even more destruction to what could never have been a quiet little suburban town. After being beaten almost to death, Jack Donnelly demands to be tranferred out of Meadowlands. Samantha agrees, on the condition he tell no one he is leaving. About the same time, Zoe decides she is Jack’s only hope at a normal life, after discovering his fear-induced and rage-based rapes and killings. Somehow she decides she can see the humanity in Jack and begins her quest to bring him back from the brink.

The Brogans also get a new neighbor, Gordon, whom Danny is convinced works for the crime family he is still afraid of. Why is Danny so afraid of them? We still don’t know if he ratted them out, if he was on their side or against them, if he was simply someone laundering money for them through his bar, or what. My guess? He started out laundering money and ended up an accessory to murder. At any rate, Danny’s paranoia kicks into high gear at the site of this man whom he remembers standing outside of the fire that nearly claimed Mark’s life.

Evelyn and Zoe head off to a dinner party at the good doctor’s house, wherein Zoe keenly figures out her mother’s flirtatious habits and knocks her down a few levels in her “mom rating”. Does anyone else covet Zoe’s hair? What about wanting to rip that choker off the good doctor’s wife’s neck? Why must she constantly be wearing such horrible items?

While the Brogan women are at the dinner party, Mark is at home alone, playing dressup in his sister’s clothes. All fine and good until Jack Donnelly shows up to tell Zoe he will be her willing patient, that he does not want to leave after all, and that he has decided to try to behave. This all goes down the crapper when he sees Mark’s fear, and attempts to rape him. Danny shows up in the nick of time, beating Jack to death with his bare hands.

It is at this moment Gordon shows back up, but in a twist so beautifully orchestrated it could have only been done by Showtime, Gordon was not sent into Meadowlands to kill Danny, but to kill Jack. When Samantha told him he’d be leaving, what she meant was permanently, and from the face of the earth.

Do we find out more regarding Gordon? What will the Brogan men do with Jack’s body? How long before we find out everyone’s dirty little secrets? Stick with me as I explore further into the dregs of Meadowlands!

meadowlands

In leiu of a ton of content for any one thing, I’m going to give you a bunch of smaller content items in bullet-point style. Sorry for those that don’t like it!

  • You can watch a preview of Californication now on Showtime’s site. I’m still thinking this show will either explode or be the worst thing ever. How about you?
  • Dexter is still in reruns until September, and it looks like after they re-play season one’s finale, they’re just going to start over again with the first season. This is a great opportunity for those six of you who have missed an episode to catch up!
  • Have you checked out Our Chart yet? It’s got great blogs, videos to watch, profiles of women all over the world to friend, and my favorite, the L Word Insider, which features great videos and never-before seen footage.
  • A new Meadowlands episode is on Sunday. Are you signed up yet to receive the weekly text messages? Are you as in love with the show as I am? Which character has already become your favorite, as Mark has for me.
  • Today is the last day to enter in the comment contest for the first season of the Tudors on DVD. Head on over to this post to give me your comment and enter your name in the drawing. I’ll be announcing the winner on Monday!

first pics from Tudors Season 2 released

    Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

The first season just ended, and already Showtime is teasing us with glimpses into season two of The Tudors. Here’s one such image for your enjoyment!

    season 2 image

Interesting that it’s the king and Brandon. And hoo-boy does Henry Cavill look good. JRM? Not so much. Maybe I’m not a fan of the tiny little creepy moustache, though.

At any rate, hopefully more of these will surface! For now, don’t forget to enter the comment contest to win the first season of The Tudors on DVD!

    zoe and jack

A town full of fake names, histories, and lives? That’s exactly where the Brogan family ends up in the first of what promises to be another phenomenal new series from Showtime. Meadowlands follows the Brogans as they attempt to pick up the pieces after a fire leaves Mark not talking (and burned), his twin sister Zoe speaking for him, and Evelyn wishing she could leave the country.

    Tudors Contest!!!

    Monday, June 18th, 2007

    tudorshenry01800×600.jpg

Alright, the masses have spoken. And by masses I mean the five of you who have e-mailed me telling me the questions are too hard, there’s too many of them, and basically no one will want to play my little game for the first season of The Tudors.

So I’m getting rid of them. The contest still ends this Friday at midnight (CST) but now all you have to do is comment here with a VALID E-MAIL (website not required, although it makes it more fun for me!), and tell me a favorite from the first season: character, moment, episode, whatever. Then, after midnight on Friday, I’ll randomly choose a comment, and that commenter will be the winner.

More fun, more fair, and less work for all. So start commenting!!

Win the first season of The Tudors on DVD!

    Friday, June 15th, 2007

That’s right, the first season of the Tudors. On DVD. Not a pirated copy, people, a real, Showtime-sanctioned copy. Why? Because I’m amazing!!!

In light of my amazingness, I’m running a contest so that one of you lucky readers will win this copy of the first season, months before you can buy it in stores. While the contest won’t officially begin until Monday morning, I’ll post the rules now, so that when the official thing goes live everyone knows how to play fair.

    The Rules:

  • The contest will be a list of 20 questions that must be answered. The person who answers the most questions right between Monday June 18 (midnight cst) and Friday June 22 (11:59pm cst) will be the winner of the first season of The Tudors.
  • All questions will be posted to the blog at midnight on Monday June 18. Maybe a little earlier if I feel nice.
  • All answers MUST BE SUBMITTED TO ME VIA THE “contact me” FORM ON THE BLOG PAGE. I will not count any entries submitted through the comments, so don’t bother. Also, any answers given via the comments will immediately nullify the question they refer to.
  • You can use any websites, books, whatever you want. Which means this contest should be easier than you think in some respects. However, because I’m allowing for the cheat factor, some questions will require some digging. I do not condone downloading pirated episodes, however, so questions regarding episodes of the show will not require that to be answered correctly.
  • Any questions about these rules should be submitted to me via the “contact me” form as well. I cannot promise to answer questions posted in the comments, although I will try.
  • The winner will be announced Monday June 25 at 10am (or thereabouts).
  • I will NOT repost these rules anywhere, although I will link to them.
  • Stand by for posting of questions Monday and have a great weekend!

The men of Meadowlands: a picture of crazy

    Thursday, June 14th, 2007

With the women of Meadowlands rocking the suburb(s), you’d think the men would be just as amazing. However, the male characters of Meadowlands look like a class picture at the psych ward! Check out these “bios”:

    danny
Danny Brogan, the patriarch of the Brogan clan and the main focus of the show, plays like the poster child for the compulsive liars club. Potential mob ties and the cause of a fire that brought his family to Meadowlands, I wouldn’t be suprised at any of the secrets that are slowly revealed about this man.

    mark brogan
The character flaws in Mark Brogan actually make me a little angry. Described as having “high functioning autism” some of his actions jive more with a variety of other issues not pertaining to autism. However, of the Brogan clan, Mark seems the most likely to flourish in his new environment.

    policeman
Bernard the crazy policeman is an almost textbook sociopath. His crazy runs incredibly deep, and as the portrait of his life before Meadowlands becomes clearer and clearer, the more thankful I am no one like him lives in my neighborhood!

    jack
Then there’s the creepy handyman, Jack. Clearly a rapist, this one gets off on the fear he brings women. Awesome. Truly awesome. This character makes me wonder; why did Showtime feel the need to put such a mysoginistic character in their new series?!

    dr. york
And finally we have super creepy Dr. York. Super, stalker-creepy Dr. York. Makes me glad my doctor’s a woman, what with his risque medical practices and blackmail. Not that his wife’s a peach, either, but this one? Should be locked up.

With such creepy and crazy men, here’s hoping the women of Meadowlands can survive, much less thrive!

    Jonathan Rhys Meyers Emmy Nod?!

    Thursday, June 14th, 2007

    jrm

Jonathan Rhys Meyers garnered an article in Variety this past week, and they’ve called him an Emmy contender for his role in The Tudors. To read the full article, head here, but check out these great excerpts as well.

  • “For “The Tudors,” in which he stars as a young Henry VIII, the actor, who turns 30 next month, needed to blend menace with emerging gravitas.
  • “I had to make his intellect bigger than anybody else’s, his ambition bigger than anybody else’s, his energy bigger than anybody else’s. And I had to make him the most dangerous man in court.”
  • “I want people to love to hate Henry,” the actor says. “He’s a bastard, but he’s an interesting bastard. Nobody’s going to be interested in the good guy for 10 hours; it’s not fascinating. Everybody sort of likes these dangerous characters, so I think people are going to like him against their better judgment — or they’re going to hate him but still want to watch.”
