“Absinthe Makes The Heart Grow Fonder” - Californication Review

Could there still be a spark between Karen and Hank? What happens when Charlie’s wife catches him with Dani the assistant? So much goodness happens in this episode! For the full recap, keep reading.

Hank’s grocery shopping and drinking at the same time (always a good combo!), and smoking in the store, which is probably a no-no. He runs into some hottie in her crochet bikini and she tries to quote Sabbath to him. Once in the checkout, she doesn’t have enough money to buy her bottle of wine, so Hank helps her out before she runs off. When he gets a dirty look from the checkout lady, he tells her he loves all women, and offers to hit on her too. Aw, so sweet Hank! Once outside the store, who should be waiting for him but the hot brunette. Wonder what happens next?!

Back at Hank’s place, and they’re not sleeping together yet, but smoking pot and listening to music like a bunch of hipies. Before even finding out her name the two fuck. Next thing you know, Hank’s passed out on his floor naked and it’s the next morning. After opening the door to find Mia, he discovers she’s stolen his guitar and his records. Mia wants to steal some more of Hank’s writing, but he’s unwilling to give her a freebie. He says instead he’ll help her with her writing, which blows her away as her own dad doesn’t offer to help with her homework.

Back at Charlie’s office, the slutty assistant Dani is crawling around on the floor “looking for an advil” when the Mrs. stops by for a suprise visit. At least she’s got all her clothes on for once. They work their way into some sort of bullshit lie which of course she doesn’t believe. The Mrs is still looking to get laid, and her baldie hubby is unwilling. She somehow convinces him, and they fuck in his chair, although he doesn’t really let her get off, too. At least they’re sort of working their relationship out.

Hank heads off to meet Karen at their Becca’s battle of the bands contest. She’s playing guitar and singing, which is super huge and cute (and she’s not that bad!), and Hank actually tears up a bit. Afterwards the three head out to get waffle cones, and Becca suggests more “family” outings, even if they’re not going to end up back together. Just then, Hank’s phone rings, and it’s Mia. She’s with her teacher who might just be all coked out and trying to get her into a three-some. Do we believe it? Hank does, and busts up his family time to go rescue the little minx from herself (and the teach). Turns out she wasn’t completely lying (she was with her teacher, although she wasn’t in danger) and so Hank gets to play the rescuer, her knight in shining armor.

Charlie and his wife are in bed together that night, and she’s wondering if Dani heard the pair. He brings up potential role-playing with his wife, and she’s a little freaked out by it. I don’t think she really wants to be his slave, but seeing as the marriage is already on the rocks, she’s willing to do it. One ass slap, and the evening is done!

After Mia gets out of the car, Hank runs around front and knocks on the door, talks to Karen for a bit. She invites him in for a drink, and the two talk about what they’d do if Becca actually became a rockstar. The two are a little drunk, and so Hank asks Karen if Bill makes her happy, and she admits that he does. And that Hank hadn’t made her happy in a long time. He admits that aside from Becca he misses her smell most of all, that he didn’t wash the sheets for a long time so he could keep smelling her.

HOLY SHIT THEY KISSED! She’s just gotten done telling him he’d run for hte hills and they kissed. And then she shoves him into the pool because she’s super drunk. Hank dreams he’s kissing Karen, but wakes up to Mia on top of him. He’s in Karen’s house still, having been too drunk to drive home. So great that Hank has to wear khakis and a pink polo of Bill’s because his clothes are all gross. And the four are sitting there as one happy family, even though they’re just not at all. Just then Bill calls, and you can tell Karen would rather be talking to Hank than Bill, despite what she said about Bill making her happy.

Back at home reading Mia’s story, there’s a knock at his door and it’s the girl who stole his stuff. She’s back with every piece of it, asking if he wants to get high and listen to some records. And her name is … but he stops her.
