Californicaton “Pilot” review(ish)

pilot

I’m just not sure how I feel about Californication. I want to like it. I went into the episode sure I’d love it. And then … and then I don’t know what happened, because by the time the episode was done, I just wasn’t sure anymore.

I love how David Duchovny plays Hank Moody with such dry sarcasm and dead-pan humor. The daughter is genius. I love every single casting choice, to be honest. So that can’t be the problem.

I love that the show starts with Hank hitting rock bottom, though he doesn’t quite know it yet. From sleeping with married women to perusing his own book in bookstores, Hank is the epitome of the sleazy guy who doesn’t quite get that he’s sleazy. By the end of the episode, he gets just how sleazy he truly has become, though. Between fighting to win back his ex-lover, having to pick up his junior-high daughter at what appears to be a college party, and then discovering the girl he’d slept with (and who punched him in the eye, no less) is really just a 16-year-old are enough to make him realize he’s definitely at the dregs of himself.

And while watching future episodes looking for a hint of redemption sounds SUPER fun (snort) I’m pretty sure I’ll watch the show again and again. Because I know there will probably be no redemption for Hank Moody. He’ll continue on with his womanizing ways, oblivious to the damage he’s inflicting.

No, I will watch week after week because it looks like he’s titling his next book “Fuck”. And that’s good enough for me!
