Case Study: Tom Tyrell

One of the great features to the Meadowlands website is their “character files”. They read like a personal dossier of each member of Meadowlands, with their current biographical info laid out for the world to see. However, many of their previous life files are blocked, and we as an internet community are only granted access as more is revealed about each character.
This week, the powers that be opened up the file to Tom Tyrell, and we learned this about him:
“Tom Tyrell is the local golf pro and was the first resident to move into Meadowlands. Life, for Tyrell, is but a metaphor for golf. He eats, breathes, sleeps the game. His whole conversation is a series of golfing terms. The man is bland beyond comprehension and is happy that way.”
“Tom Tyrell’s studied blandness is a result of his tumultuous previous life as left wing journalist Mike Morrison. A politically driven campaigner, he criss-crossed the world, exposing and fighting injustice, risking life and limb so that the poor, the weak, and the disenfranchised would have better lives. Some called him a cause junkie, an issue tourist, but Morrison was unswerving. He ate, lived, slept and breathed the cause to the uncompromising exclusion of every other aspect of his life. Until, having exposed an international prostitution racket, his wife was brutally killed in reprisal.”
So Tom, whom Zoe has both begun and ended an affair with, has a serious past. And while we learned much of this from the most recent episode, I wonder how much of this will come into play in the future. With Jack, the more we learned about him the more it played into the storyline. And having a former journalist in the Meadowlands community might not make the other residents feel too safe. What do you think?
