Watching Showtime

Just five minutes away from my super conservative state, Iowa did something we liberal midwesterners thought could never happen.

They repealed a law limiting marriage to man/woman partnerships only. effectively legalizing gay marriage.

And how did they do it? They stated that to limit it was violating people’s constitutional right to “pursuit of happiness”.

In a nation where even hippies and Hollywood starlets can’t keep marriage for everyone, I was completely convinced Iowa wouldn’t be able to pull it off? For real, we make fun of our neighbors to the east, saving the best of our barbs for the city directly to the east of us (Council Bluffs, i love you so!). Now, however? I kind of want to pack up and move ten minutes away to a state that regularly shows up blue on the map, and recognizes all people are in fact created equal.

GO IOWA!!!

(yes, I realize this has nothing to do with Showtime. But it’s a huge, monumental thing for the GLBT community, which this blog loves and supports.)

With all the amazing stars and shows on the Showtime Network, there’s only so much news I can bring to you here on the blog. So much gets missed as I edit down the amount of information I can write down in a single day.

While the stars of my favorite network didn’t win any awards last night, that didn’t seem to stop them from shaking a few tail feathers at the exclusive Showtime after-party! It looks like just about everyone was there, either on the red carpet itself or inside (JRM didn’t make an appearance for photogs outside, but showed up to party with his fellow Network stars). Even crazy Bai Ling managed to show up and grace the network with her presence!

Half the fun of the Golden Globes is the wide variety of outfit choices, and this year was no different. The stars of Showtime arrived looking better than most of the stars attending, sporting classic and chic looks that wowed photographers and journalists alike.

The arrivals were not without a few surprises, either. Michael C. Hall and Jennifer Carpenter made their official debut as husband and wife, after a private wedding ceremony on New Year’s Eve.

The couple had been dating for about a year, and while I’m happy for the couple, most people seem to be stuck on the ‘squick’ factor of the couple playing brother and sister on Dexter. I’ll admit there’s part of me that wants to be grossed out, but it’s not due to their love. I’m much more eeked out by how skinny Jennifer seems to be getting – here’s hoping Michael will feed her a bunch of hamburgers when they get home!

Another surprise for the night? Jonathan Rhys Meyers arriving without girlfriend Reena Hammer. No word on any of the gossip sites as to why, but these two had been attending every event together for some time now, and their on-again/off-again status seemed to have finally locked on “on”. Here’s hoping the couple is doing fine, and Reena simply had engagements elsewhere.
