Watching Showtime

With the women of Meadowlands rocking the suburb(s), you’d think the men would be just as amazing. However, the male characters of Meadowlands look like a class picture at the psych ward! Check out these “bios”:

Danny Brogan, the patriarch of the Brogan clan and the main focus of the show, plays like the poster child for the compulsive liars club. Potential mob ties and the cause of a fire that brought his family to Meadowlands, I wouldn’t be suprised at any of the secrets that are slowly revealed about this man.

The character flaws in Mark Brogan actually make me a little angry. Described as having “high functioning autism” some of his actions jive more with a variety of other issues not pertaining to autism. However, of the Brogan clan, Mark seems the most likely to flourish in his new environment.

Bernard the crazy policeman is an almost textbook sociopath. His crazy runs incredibly deep, and as the portrait of his life before Meadowlands becomes clearer and clearer, the more thankful I am no one like him lives in my neighborhood!

Then there’s the creepy handyman, Jack. Clearly a rapist, this one gets off on the fear he brings women. Awesome. Truly awesome. This character makes me wonder; why did Showtime feel the need to put such a mysoginistic character in their new series?!

And finally we have super creepy Dr. York. Super, stalker-creepy Dr. York. Makes me glad my doctor’s a woman, what with his risque medical practices and blackmail. Not that his wife’s a peach, either, but this one? Should be locked up.

With such creepy and crazy men, here’s hoping the women of Meadowlands can survive, much less thrive!

As the premiere of Meadowlands fast approaches, I become more and more exicted … mostly because the show is amazing, but there is also a large part of me that is giddy with anticipation at seeing so many powerful women in one show. The writers have given us at least four women who stand on their own two feet, not backing down to the men in their lives.

Evelyn Brogan, the matriarch of the family, starts out the season rather whiny, unfortunately. She is still attempting to get her bearings as her life has been completely transformed out from under her. She quickly takes the lead in the family, however, keeping everything together as her husband slowly falls to pieces (and back into old habits).

Zoe Brogan, however, does not need transition time to take control of her new life. Just shy of eighteen, she brashly speaks for her twin brother and seduces several men in her new community. Not afraid of anything or anyone, she cares only that her family stay together. While Zoe may still have her typically “girlie” moments and a certain amount of naivette left, she is a powerful force.

Jezebel is an intereting character. She believes herself to be the most beautiful woman in Meadowlands, and I still have yet to decide if the writers intended this to be a character flaw, as Jez weighs in (according to the Showtime website) at over 200 pounds. I choose to believe, however, that Jez is the embodiment of body-power and healthy self-image, as the girl is clearly beautiful. Here’s hoping the writers don’t throw in sabotage to my theory.

Finally, there is Samantha. Presented to us as Danny’s handler, she is the one who holds all the cards at Meadowlands. Showtime’s website calls her “one of the boys”, but that’s just a way to strip her of her power over so many men who clearly fear her. She has placed them in Meadowlands, and she can remove them, sending them to jail (and in some cases, certain death). Relying on no one but herself, Samantha is a model of power and control in a sea of confusion.

With just over a week to go before the premiere of Showtime’s newest thriller, I got the chance to sneak a peek at a few of the episodes. Holy cow is this show amazing! I will admit I wasn’t a believer, but just ten minutes into the first episode I was hooked.

Meadowlands is a small town somewhere in England, full of neighborly cheer and safety. Beneath all this cheer, however, lies a town full of secrets, as Meadowlands is a safe haven for those in the witness protection program. The series brings us all to Meadowlands with Danny Brogan, the patriarch of the Broga clan who has apparently seen or done too much and now needs protection.

His family, Evelyn his wife, and Zoe and Mark the twins, are forced to come with him, changing their names and their histories along with Danny. Dropped off blindfolded in front of what is to be their new home, you quickly discover not everyone in the clan is happy to be in Meadowlands. And the excitement just builds from there.

At risk of spoiling too much, the season holds secrets of each of the main characters, many of those in the town, a murder mystery and so much more, Meadowlands is a definite must-watch! And don’t forget to check back here regularly for bios of the actors, episode reviews, and much more.

Showtime is bringing on at least two more new shows this year, one of which is the incredibly dark and twisted Meadowlands. With two teaser-trailers up on the website and a “behind the scenes” video to add to that, I’m totally hooked already, and cannot wait for June and the beginning of this show.

Set in a suburban town in England, Meadowlands follows the lives of a family of four who has been sent to this town as part of a witness protection program. What appears to be heaven (their second chance at life, anonymity) quickly turns into a sort of creepy other-world, with everyone holding onto secrets and no one in the town trusting each other.

I cannot wait for more info about the show!
