“Last Waltz” - Californication recap
It’s the day of Karen and Bill’s wedding, and things couldn’t be more hectic. From Hank still wanting Karen to leave Bill to Mia’s drunken outbursts, this wedding is anything but normal, down to the very last second. For the full recap, keep reading.
Karen and Bill’s wedding is upon us, and someone’s having dreams of Hank interrupting the wedding to try to sweep Karen off her feet, but instead Hank falls off a cliff. Hank wakes up to the nightmare, and finds Karen kissing him, but not really. It’s yet another dream. This time he wakes up to Becca looking over him worried.
Drinking before a wedding is never a good idea, even if you’re not one of the people in it. And wouldn’t you know it, Becca gets her first period that morning! At the market he runs into some cunty bitch who took the last box of tampons and won’t even sell him one or two for Becca. Before they leave Hank gets into a fight and tosses the tampons to Becca. When the woman figures out they’re for her, she offers to help and the fighting ceases.
At the site of the wedding, Mia’s already drinking and causing trouble by talking smack about the wedding. And then Bill tells her he can’t let her publish “her” book because of the country’s climate and how it will affect his business. He’s worried about how it will affect him, and afraid of the content and how much the male lead resembles Hank. She walks off upset, and then we cut to Karen and Marcy smoking pot! Marcy’s come around a bit on the Bill issue, mostly because her marriage is in the shitter. And then Karen’s confessing to Marcy that she slept with Hank, and when she starts to cry they immediately panic about Karen’s make-up!
Mia runs into Charlie and she’s even drunker than before, sad as she is about the book not being published. Charlie tells Mia she knows everything about the book and the fucking and punching, and Mia lets him know she knows about Charlie and the assistant. A few more quips between the two, and they part ways.
Hank and Becca pull up n a super dirty car, and Marcy runs up to steal Becca away while simultaneously telling Hank she knows about the one-night stand. Marcy and Becca run off and Hank heads off to talk to Karen. It would appear Karen’s having some serious regrets about the way her life has turned out, and despite the obvious love the two share (and how much Karen really wants Hank to make a big romantic sweeping gesture and ruin her wedding day), Hank tells her it’s up to her to decide what to do next and that he won’t interfere.
At the “why these two should not be wed” moment, Hank’s not the one to speak up, Mia is. Drunk as she is she starts to file her grievances. She says the two don’t love each other, that Karen’s still in love with Hank (and that he’s obviously the guy for her), that despite how much she wants her dad to be happy Karen’s not the one for her. Hank tries to rescue the situation and take Mia off to get some coffee, and he tells her to let it go. That’s when Mia tells the whole place how Hank fucked her and then bailed out.
Instead of bailing out, Hank tells Mia to tell the story truthfully, and in her first real moment as a decent human being, she tells everyone they didn’t do it, that she was just acting out “her” book. Bill punched Hank, doesn’t apologize for it, and tells Karen that he loves her and that he wants to marry her. Karen says her “I do” and it pretty much seals the deal.
At least they agreed to let Becca and her band play at the reception.
Hank says he might get into teaching, which Charlie of course thinks is a bad idea, and then Becca asks her dad to dance. Cue sappy music and insightful comments from a teenager. Mia cuts in and everything seems to be slowly working out between the two of them as well. And then the biggest bombshell of them all? It was Mia’s first sexual experience!!! Stoned Marcy cuts in next, and Hank forces the fighting husband and wife to kiss and make up. Next on the feel-good moment? Hank and Karen and Becca all dancing together until Becca takes off and Karen and Hank are left to dance alone. Poetic words, an almost-kiss, and the pair let go of each others hands and she goes off to Bill. Becca even manages to get her first kiss, which means Hank’s the last man standing.
And then, before you know it, Karen’s jumping into Hank’s car and running from the wedding she just finished, back to her life and Hank!!!
End of season, end of my wavering about this show. I LOVED IT. Now, do we think there’s going to be a second season??? Yes, I know they say there will be, but that doesn’t always hold true.
